MY GUN’S LOADED pulled off the upset victory in Saturday’s 146th edition of the Grade 1, Alabama Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.
The Chad Brown-trained filly upstaged the heavy, odds-on favorite COUNTING STARS in a thrilling stretch run, reinforcing the legendary reputation of Saratoga as the Graveyard of Favorites.
COUNTING STARS entered the 1 1/4-mile contest seeking her third consecutive Grade 1 win at The Spa. She took her expected position at the front of the field, setting a steady, deliberate pace, while jockey Manny Franco kept MY GUN’S LOADED tucked closely behind the front-runner throughout the race.
As the field turned for home, Franco made his move, drawing alongside the favorite in the stretch and powered on past the Mark Casse trained filly.
MY GUN’S LOADED displayed impressive stamina in her Stakes debut, surging past COUNTING STARS and digging deep to hold off a late closing charge from runner-up MEASURE.
MY GUN’S LOADED completed the 10 furlongs in a time of 2:04.87 on a fast track, securing the victory by a neck.
This marks a massive career milestone for the 3-year-filly, who successfully stepped up in class to capture an elite tier victory in just her fourth career start.
