A Couple Future Stars Friday Longshots

The 2026 Breeders’ Cup is two days away. The world’s best horses and their connections have arrived at Keeneland for the two-day racing extravaganza- one that provides plenty of opportunities to make a decent score.

With so many talented horses from around the globe entered in the World Championships, there are bound to be some winning longshots. Here are two for Friday’s card that should be considered quite live.

RACE 6. Junenile Turf Sprint, 5 ½ furlongs: #1 MOONRISE [ML 12-1] Jockey: Oisin Murphy. Trainer: Andrew Balding. Jumping right in with not just the first of the Breeders’ Cup races, but the very first horse in the program. This race has a few attractive wagering propositions, and this Irish-bred filly ranks right near the top.

MOONRISE is 3-for-5 to this point in her career. Murphy is 3-for-3 aboard this daughter of CHURCHILL, and at his best, he’s one of the top four or five riders on the planet. She was a close-up 4th last time out in a Group 1 race at Newmarket going six furlongs after showing some tactical speed, and the cutback to 5 1/2 furlongs should suit her well.

The one negative is that her best races have come on the synthetic track at Kempton Park, not turf. However, she did prevail in a Group 3 race on the grass at Ascot in July and was 2nd of 25 in the Windsor Castle Stakes during the Royal Ascot meet. A very talented filly, with some attractive morning-line odds.

RACE 10. Juvenile Turf, One Mile: #8 LIAM’S LAW [ML 20-1] Jockey: Jose Ortiz. Trainer: Todd Pletcher. LIAM’S LAW may benefit from the probable race shape and could still be on the improve for his Hall of Fame trainer.

There doesn’t seem to be a ton of true early speed entered here. LIAM’S LAW, however, wants to be forwardly placed. He’s never been headed in two turf starts, including a score in the Grade 3 With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga. Mind you, that was against a very short field, but at the very least, he has early speed and can carry that speed this 1 1/16-mile distance.

Ortiz opted to ride, which is certainly a plus, and the colt has improved on speed figures in each of his three starts to date. He’ll need to step forward again, but he’ll have every opportunity to do that if his running style is as effective as the anticipated race shape says it will be.

Another to consider here is #4 HAFFNER, but he will most likely get bet down from his 8-1 morning-line price, therefore not offering longshot value.
