The $500,000 dollar, Grade 2 Ohio Derby, will be run on Saturday at 1 1/8 miles at Thistledown in the suburbs of Cleveland. The race drew a field of eight 3-year-olds led by WHITE ABARRIO.
This year’s edition of Ohio Derby field includes the Winners of the Florida Derby (G1), Tampa Bay Derby (G2), Holy Bull (G3) and Lexington (G3).
Two other 3-year-olds who Won Stakes races are in the field, and a trio of the contestants ran in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
The Kentucky Derby runners are TAWNY PORT, who finished 7th behind RICH STRIKE on May 7th; CLASSIC CAUSEWAY, who was 11th; and WHITE ABARRIO, who finished 16th.
This will be the first start for CLASSIC CAUSEWAY since being moved out of the barn of Brian Lynch, in order to be trained by Ken McPeek.
ETHEREAL ROAD, Winner of the Sir Barton at Pimlico, is also in the field of eight.
Some of the top trainers and riders in the country are giving the Ohio Derby a go this year, with the majority of the field having taken part on the Triple Crown trail.
On Friday the Daily Racing Blog will take a closer look at the entire field for this year’s event. So stop back and see who we like.
