Gulfstream Park has always been a key racetrack on the road to the Kentucky Derby, and in recent years three of the last eight Kentucky Derby Winners prepped with at least one start at the Hallandale Beach track while on the Derby trail.
Saturday’s $200,000, Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes (named in honor of the 1994 Horse Of The Year) is the first of three Kentucky Derby qualifying races at Gulfstream Park.
The 1 1/16-mile Stakes Race, which offers the top four finishers Derby points (10-4-2-1), drew a field of nine, including a pair of impressive debut Winners for Todd Pletcher.
After Saturday, Gulstream will host the Fountain of Youth Stakes on February 27th, followed by the Florida Derby on the 27th of March.
Three Holy Bull Stakes runners have used the race as a springboard to a Victory in the Kentucky Derby: GO FOR GIN (1994), FUNNY CIDE (2003), and BARBARO, the 2006 Winner who then went on to take the Florida Derby before Winning the Run For The Roses.
TIZ THE LAW Won this race last year and ended up taking the first jewel of the 2020 Triple Crown – the Belmont Stakes – before running 2nd in the rescheduled Kentucky Derby.
The Holy Bull is listed as race 11 on a card of 12, with a scheduled Post Time of 4:50.
