Saturday’s $750,000 dollar, Grade 1 Whitney Stakes is an annual highlight of the Saratoga Race Course summer meet.
It is a race that has major importance on the road to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships in the fall.
Even without the Breeders Cup significance the Whitney is one of the most historic and significant races for older dirt horses in North America.
Some of the past greats who have Won this contest include: DISCOVERY (three times), WAR ADMIRAL, KELSO (three times), EASY GOER, and ALYDAR.
Those are just a few of the legendary horses that have Won the Whitney through the years.
The 92nd Whitney Stakes is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge, Win & You’re In race.
Saturday’s Winner will receive an expenses-paid berth to the $7 million dollar Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 7th at Keeneland Race Course.
The 1 1/8-mile race drew a compact but competitive field headlined by Grade 1 Winners TOM’S D’ETAT, CODE OF HONOR, and IMPROBABLE.
The Whitney is one of five Stakes Races on Saturday’s card. Also to be contested are the $500,000 dollar Personal Ensign (G1), $300,000 Allen Jerkens (G1), $250,000 Bowling Green (G2) and $200,000 Caress Stakes.
It looks to be a great day of racing.
On Friday the Daily Racing Blog will take a closer look at the distinguished field of five. So stop back to compare our picks with yours.
