Remember Your First Time ?

It was a long, long time ago, but I remember it like it was (almost) yesterday. I was 14-15 years-old and I was at the Saratoga Race Course with my Uncle Louie. And while I had been to this fabled course as a wee lad on a few occasions, I had never been old enough (6 or 7 perhaps) to be given my own race program.  But on … Continue reading Remember Your First Time ?

Racing Superstitions

Horseplayers are a superstitious lot. Despite knowing that the worries are (mostly) unfounded and whatever happens can (usually) be explained away. Here are just a few of the superstitions that we horseplayers have either seen or been guilty of over the years. 1. Don’t Break The Routine. Perhaps you have to buy your program or past performances from the same place every time. Maybe you need … Continue reading Racing Superstitions

Making The Grade

When looking at any horses’ past performances there is always an indication of the types of races in which they participated. For many of the upper echelon of horses that means Graded Stakes races. For example, Travers Stakes (G1). But for those unfamiliar with the sport, the G1 probably doesn’t resonate. So what is a Graded Stakes race, you might ask? In the U.S. a Graded Stakes … Continue reading Making The Grade
