Who Wins The Remsen Stakes?

If NYRA and the New York jockey colony can reach some form of an accord on Thursday, Aqueduct Park has a good card come Saturday.

One of the feature races is the Grade 2, $250,000 dollar Remsen Stakes.

2-year-olds will be tested around two turns at a 1 1/8-mile distance with the top five finishers being awarded Kentucky Derby qualifying points.

Here is a brief look at the field:

1. DAY ONE STARTER [ML 15-1] Jockey: Junior Alvarado. Trainer: Shug McGaughey. Looked good winning his second start in a 6 1/2-furlong sprint. Faded to a distant 3rd last time out in the Nashua Stakes. Could be a factor if he duplicates his Maiden win.

2. PALADIN [ML 3-1] Jockey; Flavien Prat. Trainer: Chad Brown. Won his debut via disqualification. But the time was fast and there was a five-length gap back to the third horse. Should be a key contender here.

3. I DID I DID [ML 12-1] Jockey: Joel Rosario. Trainer: Mike Maker. Was a competitive 4th in the Street Sense, but tired in the final furlong. The added distance here could work against him.

4. GRITTINESS [ML 20-1] Jockey: Jaime Rodriguez. Trainer: Todd Pletcher. Had a tough trip when second most recently to a stablemate in a Maiden race at one mile. As a son of CURLIN, he should enjoy the two turns but will need to put up better speed figures in order to win.

5. CHAMBERSVILLE [ML 30-1] Jockey: Christopher Elliott. Trainer: Ken McPeek. His only races have been on turf with one win in three tries. Pedigree doesn’t suggest a successful transition to the dirt.

6. COURTING [ML 9-2] Jockey: John Velazquez. Trainer: Todd Pletcher. Beat stablemate GRITTINESS with an improved effort in his second start. He sold for $5 million at auction, so his connections have high hopes for him. A major player.

7. IGNITER [ML 6-1] Jockey: Manny Franco. Trainer: Rick Dutrow. Is well-rested, as his Maiden win at one mile in late September. Another step or two forward puts him in the mix here.

8. CONCARNEAU [ML 50-1] Jockey: Mychel Sanchez. Trainer: Marya Montoya. In his three career starts there is one good effort and two bad ones. Look elsewhere.

9. RENEGADE [ML 5-1] Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr. Trainer: Todd Pletcher. Finished in front of PALADIN but was disqualified for bumping and impeding that rival. Takes a step forward with added distance and, as a son of INTO MISCHIEF, two turns should not be a problem.

10. BALBOA [ML 12-1] Jockey: Ricardo Santana Jr. Trainer: Brittany Russell. Started his career on the west coast in the Bob Baffert barn. But after two disappointing Graded Stakes efforts he was sent east to trainer Brittany Russell. He was an easy winner of a Laurel Sprint Stakes in his first race for his new trainer but faces a bigger challenge here.

11. TALKIN [ML 5-1] Jockey: Kendrick Carmouche. Trainer: Danny Gargin. Connections were aiming for this race rather than the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile after finishing 2nd in the Champagne Stakes on October 4th. He seems fit and up to the challenge here, though the post position in a large field of young horses is a cause for concern.

12. PROBABLY DREAMING [ML 15-1] Jockey: Carlos Lopez. Trainer: Gary Capuano. Winning here is not as far-fetched as Morning Line indicates. With a record of three wins and a 2nd in four career starts. Ran 2nd in the Nashua Stakes and would be a more attractive prospect with a better post position.

The Remsen Stakes is slated as race 9 on a card of 11 with a scheduled Post Time of 3:10.

Best of luck however you play it.
