The Grade 1, $650,000 dollar, Win and You’re In, Breeders’ Futurity is Saturday at Keeneland Race Course.
As well as the purse, the winner earns an expenses-paid entry into the $2 million dollar Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, October 31st at Del Mar.
Here is a brief look at the seven entrants:
1. BLACKOUT TIME [10-1] Jockey: Cristian Torres. Trainer: Ken McPeek. Ran 2nd in his career debut sprinting in June at Churchill. Next out he improved with a front-running 9 ¾-length runaway victory, stretching out to a mile in a maiden race at Ellis Park on August 2nd. His speed figures indicate he can compete with this group but it’s a big bump up in class.
2. BIG DOM [4-1] Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr. Trainer: Tom Amoss. Named for Philadelphia Eagles’ chief security officer Dom DiSandro, he showed grit in his debut when battling for the win, August 23rd at Saratoga. This Kentucky-bred has some pedigree to match the talent.
3. DICIASSETTE [20-1] Jockey: Jonathan Ocasio. Trainer: Patrick Biancone. Followed a July 20th debut win with a one-length score from off the pace in the August 9th Proud Man Stakes, both at Gulfstream Park. The son of champion sprinter MITOLE stretches out around two turns for this 1 1/16-mile tilt against better competition. Speed figures need to improve to be a win threat here.
4. SPICE RUNNER [ML 12-1] Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione. Trainer: Steve Asmussen. The winner of the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes, showed a new dimension- closing in that race and seemed to relish the added distance … no surprise for a colt by Hall of Famer GUN RUNNER. Speed figures put him as the fourth-fastest in the field.
5. LITMUS TEST [ML 8-1] Jickey: Flavien Prat. Trainer: Bob Baffert. Last out finished 4th in the Del Mar Futurity. Baffert has four 2-year-olds running in the American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita Saturday. Perhaps LITMUS TEST was shipped to Keeneland with the hope of a softer landing after the dismal performance at Del Mar.
6. TED NOFFEY [ML 4-5] Jockey: John Velazquez. Trainer: Todd Pletcher. Has two wins in two starts and overwhelmed his six opponents in his last start- the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes September 1st at Saratoga. He earned a (field-best) 104 speed figure for the 8 ½-length Hopeful win.
7. EWING [ML 9-2] Jockey: Jose Ortiz. Trainer: Mark Casse. After his 12-length debut win, the colt by KNICKS GO improved to 2-for-2 with a one-length victory in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special on August 2nd. The probable pacesetter may influence the pace of this race, but his speed figures indicate he’ll need to take a big step forward to be a factor down the stretch.
The Breeders’ Futurity is slated as race 9 on a card of 11 with a scheduled post Time of 5:15.
Best of luck however you play it.
