Brian Hernandez Jr. posted an official update from his X account Tuesday night.
He confirmed he had a successful surgery to stabilize his injuries.
The Kentucky Derby-winning jockey seems to be on the mend after a scary fall at Churchill Downs which necessitated the surgery.
Hernandez was riding ST. GARCIA in the third race at Churchill Downs Sunday when the colt injured one of his front legs near the 5/16th pole which cause Hernandez to be thrown to the ground.
In addition to suffering broken ribs, Hernandez also sustained a punctured lung and a liver laceration- which have been repaired with a procedure(s).
In 2024 Hernandez won both the Kentucky Derby (MYSTIK DAN) and Kentucky Oaks (THORPEDA ANNA).
He continues to be one of the top riders in the Kentucky jockey colony.
Trainer and friend of Hernandez’ Kenny McPeek on Monday said that Hernandez was “on the road to recovery.”
On his official X account Hernadez stated: “I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers! The doctors here at University of Louisville Hospital have been absolutely fantastic. Hopefully one step closer to going home. Many thanks.”
Get well soon Brian.
