Who Wins The Woodbine Mile?

The Grade 1, million dollar Woodbine Mile Stakes is Saturday, September 13th at Woodbine Racetrack

The Woodbine Mile is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series Win and You’re In qualifying race for the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Del Mar.

Here is a brief look at the field for the Woodbine Mile:

1. STANLEY HOUSE [ML 10-1] Jockey: Leo Salles. Trainer: Mike De Paulo. The 5-year-old enters off his first career Stakes win, a front-running, four-length romp in the 1 ¼-mile Niagara Stakes August 2nd on the turf at Woodbine. He cuts back in distance to a mile and would need to produce a career-best effort to post a victory here but he has been in the money five times in Graded Stakes.

2. NOTABLE SPEECH [ML 8-5] Jockey: William Buick. Trainer: Charlie Appleby. Was an English Classic winner a year ago at age 3 but is winless in four races this year. He was beaten by less than three lengths in Group 1 races in each of his first three starts before showing improved form in his most recent race. Given his connections, his effort in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile, and multiple successes at this Group 1 level, NOTABLE SPEECH will be tough to beat with a top effort.

3. ONE STRIPE [ML 5-2] Jockey: John Velazquez. Trainer: Graham Motion. Has five group stakes wins to his credit, including a pair of Group 1s, and earned an expenses-paid berth into the Breeders’ Cup Mile via his 1 ¾-length victory January 4th in the $3 million King’s Plate at Kenilworth. ONE STRIPE returns from the extended layoff for his first North American start as a bit of a wild card. The 5 ½-month layoff is a valid concern, but he is 3-for-3 at this one-mile distance with a track record of success against elite competition.

4. HUNT MASTER [ML 20-1] Jockey: Eswan Flores. Trainer: Martin Hinckson. Competed in the Queen’s Plate in 2022 and won a minor Stakes race at Woodbine in 2024, but he makes his Graded Stakes debut in the Woodbine Mile against an accomplished group. This is an ambitious assignment for the 6-year-old gelding, who probably would need to boost his career-top speed figure by 10-12 points to be a viable win threat here. HUNT MASTER is cross-entered in the Branded Cities Stakes, which is also Saturday at Woodbine.

5. WYOMING BILL [ML 15-1] Jockey: Frankie Dettori. Trainer: Catherine Day Phillips. He enters the Woodbine Mile off a runner-up finish in the Grade 2 King Edward Stakes at this course and distance August 16th. He was beaten by three-quarters of a length in his Graded Stakes debut in the King Edward, which followed a win, a 2nd, and a 3rd in his three prior starts at distances ranging from 7 ½ furlongs to 1 1/16 miles on the Woodbine turf.

6. MY BOY PRINCE [ML 10-1] Jockey: Joel Rosario. Trainer: Mark Casse. He opened 2025 with a stakes win sprinting in May and remained at shorter distances for 2nds in both the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes at Saratoga and the Grade 2 Highlander Stakes at Woodbine. His last out he had the lead going into the stretch of the G1 Fourstardave Stakes before he was caught late, beaten by two lengths while fading to 4th at a mile at Saratoga.

7. NAPTOWN [ML20-1] Jockey: Victor Carrasco. Trainer: Jose Magana. Won in his most recent start at Colonial Downs rallying from off the pace to win an allowance race by two lengths as the even-money favorite. He steps way up in class here for his first try in a Graded race in the Woodbine Mile. NAPTOWN is in very good form but would need to boost his speed figures by 18-20 points to be a serious win contender.

8. WIN FOR THE MONEY [ML 8-1] Jockey: Patrick Husbands. Trainer: Mark Casse.  He won this race last year, but is winless in five starts since the 2024 Woodbine Mile. He’s been competitive with a trio of 3rd-place finishes in his four starts this year, all in Graded Stakes. In his last out WIN FOR THE MONEY ran 3rd in the Grade 1 Fourstardave at Saratoga. His speed figures stack up pretty well with this group.

9. GAS ME UP [ML 5-1] Jockey: Rafael Hernandez. Trainer: Kevin Attard. In his last outing the 5-year-old gelding won the $200,000 King Edward Stakes by three-quarters of a length at this one-mile distance. He steps up in class for the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile and would very likely need to improve his career-best speed figure by about 10 points to be a win contender.

The Woodbine Mile is listed as race 9 on a card of 12 with a scheduled Post Time of 5:40. Best of luck however you play it.
