Triple Crown Rematch?

The possibility of a rematch between Kentucky Derby Winner SOVEREIGNTY and Saturday’s Preakness Champion JOURNALISM is, at the moment, a wait and see proposition.

SOVEREIGNTY bypassed the Preakness in order to (properly) prepare for the Belmont Stakes.

JOURNALISM the Derby 2nd place finisher, posted a super-hero like effort to take the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Without the possibility of a Triple Crown Winner this year, JOURNALISM taking part in the Belmont Stakes facing SOVEREIGNTY would be THE storyline in Saratoga Springs come the first weekend in June as well as the weeks leading up to the race.

Trainer Michael McCarthy will closely monitor JOURNALISM and decide if this son of CURLIN is ready to run in all three legs of the Triple Crown in a five-week period.

So far, the signs are good, but much can change between now and June 1st when entries close for the 1 ¼-mile Belmont Stakes.

“It would be three races in five weeks but if the horse is doing as well as he’s doing now it would be hard to offer up any excuses,” McCarthy said on Sunday when asked about the possibility of running in the Belmont. “He ate up last night and he seems pleased with himself. So, we’ll weigh the pros and cons.”

“I think it would be great for the sport if these horses stay healthy and (whether it’s for the Belmont, Travers or Breeders’ Cup Classic) we get a rematch,” McCarthy added. “It would be great for racing. Period.”

Regardless of the Belmont decision, the connections will still savor an amazing Preakness Victory in which JOURNALISM– sandwiched between horses at the three-sixteenths pole made up five lengths on GOSGER in the final furlong to Win by a half-length.

Kentucky Derby Winner vs Preakness Champion in the Belmont Stakes? It’s up to JOURNALISM to finish that narrative.
