A total of 200 Road To The Kentucky Derby qualification points are on the line Saturday in 73rd edition of the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.

The Winner will get 100 points, while the runner-up will receive 50, the 3rd-place finisher 25, with 15 going to the 4th-place finisher and 10 for the 5th-place horse.

The 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby is one of the most influential prep races for the First Saturday In May.

This prestigious race has been the stepping-stone for a record twenty-five Kentucky Derby Winners, including last year’s Florida Derby runner-up MAGE.

Six horses since the turn of the century have Won both the Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby: MONARCHOS (2001), BARBARO (2006), BIG BROWN (2008), ORB (2013), NYQUIST (2016), and ALWAYS DREAMING (2017).

Other notable horses among the 15 to sweep the two races include NORTHERN DANCER (1964) and SPECTACULAR BID (1979).

A field of 11 has turned out for the 2024 Florida Derby, led by 2-year-old Champion FIERCENESS, who will face a talented cast of others including HADES who is undefeated in his three starts at Gulfstream Park.

The $1 million dollar, Grade 1 Florida Derby is the feature race on a 14 race card that features 10 Stakes races, including five Graded Stakes, worth $2,425,000 in purses.
