A Pegasus Primer

The Pegasus World Cup is one of the most prestigious and lucrative events in thoroughbred horse racing.

It’s been around since 2017 and continues to be a fan favorite among horse racing enthusiasts and bettors as it provides lucrative opportunities for thoroughbred owners, trainers, and bettors.

The Pegasus World Cup returns to Gulfstream Park on January 27th. Like last year, the event is expected to draw a large and competitive field where the thoroughbreds and their trainers can Win millions.

In case you’re wondering, here’s a few things to know about the Pegasus World Cup:

Purse Money: The purse money is divided into three races of the Pegasus World Cup 2024: $3 million in the Invitational (G1), $500,000 in the Filly and Mare Turf Invitational (GIII), and $1 million in the Turf Invitational (GI).

Qualifying Races: Thoroughbreds can’t just enter the Pegasus World Cup without qualifications. They must have ran in at least two Graded Stakes races within the past year, and at least one should be a Grade One race.

The Invitational Board of the Pegasus World Cup chooses the qualifying races. The horses must meet specific criteria to get approval for the competition.

The board would also select horses to compete based on their respective competitive records and results from the previous qualifying races.

However, if there are more horses than available spots, the board will simply select the best contenders among the initially selected thoroughbreds.

Racetrack: As mentioned previously, the Pegasus World Cup always occurs at Gulfstream Park, in Hallandale Beach, Florida.

However, a different course is used each year. That’s done to ensure that the horses and jockeys face a unique challenge every time they compete at this prestigious racecourse.

Each course would vary in difficulty and length, with the average race lasting just two minutes. Every race is thrilling since the weather and terrain are unpredictable.

Fans are treated to fantastic and entertaining races no matter which course the Pegasus World Cup utilizes.

Even though the Pegasus World Cup was inaugurated in the 2000s, this horse racing contest still has a rich history and huge fanfare.

Fans and thoroughbreds come together to watch and compete in this now annual, highly regarded horse racing event.
