The final Graded Stakes of the year in New York is Saturday, and it appears as though MAXIMUM SECURITY will have plenty of company in the $750,000 dollar, Grade 1 Cigar Mile Stakes on December 7th.
The New York Racing Association officials have listed 11 entries in the Cigar Mile, one of four Graded Stakes on Saturday’s card at Aqueduct Park.
MAXIMUM SECURITY, figures to be the prohibitive favorite as he chases a third Grade 1 Victory in 2019 and attempts to strengthen his argument for an Eclipse Award as the year’s top 3-year-old male.
After being disqualified as the Winner in this years Kentucky Derby, MAXIMUM SECURITY Won the Haskell Invitational Stakes at Monmouth Park in August, and most recently, the Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont Park on October 26th.
The Cigar Mile Handicap began in 1988 as the NYRA Mile. In 1994 it was Won by a record 7 lengths by the legendary CIGAR and the race was renamed for the horse in 1997. It is run annually in late November, early December.
Notable horses including FORTY NINER, RUBIANO, CONGAREE, TO HONOR AND SERVE, as well as the aforementioned CIGAR have all Won this contest.
CONGAREE Won the race in back-to-back years in 2002 and 2003 under jockey Jerry Bailey, who holds the record for Wins by a jockey with five. Trainer Todd Pletcher has Won the race a record four times. In 2014 Belmont Stakes Winner TONALIST became the first Breeders’ Cup Classic Winner to also win the Cigar Mile.
On Friday the Daily Racing Blog will take a look at the full field for this years race, and see if we can find some Value in this contest. So be sure to stop back and see how we’re going to play it.
