The Jim Dandy Stakes

The 55th running of the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) is Saturday at Saratoga. It is the traditional prep-race for the Travers’ Stakes (G1), which is August 24th this year. The Jim Dandy is a race for 3-year-olds, contested at 1 1/8 miles on the dirt, with a purse of $600,000 dollars.

Here is a brief look at the field for this years contest.

#1 LAUGHING FOX [ML 12-1]

#2 TAX [ML 6-1]

#3 MIHOS [ML 15-1]

#4  GLOBAL CAMPAIGN  [ML 3-1]

#5 TACITUS  [ML 9-5]

#6 WAR OF WILL  [ML 2-1]

It is a short, but competitive field, with seemingly no Value to be had. The 4, 5, and 6 will vie for the post-time favorite (rightfully so), while offering little or no Return On Investment.

That said, the Daily Racing Blog will be using the #2 TAX as our Live Long-Shot. He is one of four Graded Stakes Winners in the field, with the gelding picking up that Victory on the Kentucky Derby trail in the Withers (G3) going this same distance at Aqueduct Park.

He definitely prefers to press the early pace, but he also has the ability to carry his speed a distance of ground, which he displayed when he ran 4th in the Belmont Stakes.

TAX may not be the most talented horse in this field, but he’s not far behind these either. He is bred to get better with age and experience, and with a Morning-Line of 6-1 he is worth the risk.

The DRB play will be a Trifecta Key, using the #2 with all. Best of luck no matter how you play it.
