Race Of The Week

The Grade 1, $300,000 dollar, Los Alamitos Futurity is being run on Saturday December 8th.  It is for two year-olds, run at a distance of a mile & 1/16 on the dirt.  It is a “Road To The Kentucky Derby” event with the winner of the race earning ten points toward a starting spot the first Saturday in May.

It is a sparse field of six for this race on Saturday.  Such a small group seems odd, considering the past west coast Triple Crown contenders that have won this contest: AP INDYREAL QUIETPOINT GIVEN, and LOOKING AT LUCKY, just to name a few.  Maybe the two Bob Baffert morning line favorites have trainers and owners looking for an easier spot.

Here is the field for Saturday:

#1  IMPROBABLE.  Jockey: Drayden Van Dyke.  Trainer: Bob Baffert.  ML 6-5.

#2  SAVAGERY.  Jockey: Florent Geroux.  Trainer: Peter Miller.  ML 8-1.

#3  DUELING.  Jockey: Mike Smith.  Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer.  ML 6-1.

#4  KING OF SPEED.  Jockey: Kent Desormeaux.  Trainer: Jeff Bonde.  ML 15-1.

#5  EXTRA HOPE.  Jockey: Flavien Prat.  Trainer: Richard Mandella.  ML 7-2.

#6  MUCHO GUSTO.  Jockey: Joe Talamo.  Trainer: Bob Baffert.  ML 3-1.

The Daily Racing Blog concedes there is is not a lot of Value to be found in a six horse field.  We suspect that numbers 1, 5, and 6 will take all of the betting action, which will leave them unplayable if looking for a decent R.O.I.  So of the remaining three choices DRB is going to play SAVAGERY, and DUELING.  We will key them on top of a trifecta, and use only them in the Pick 3, and Pick 4.

Good luck on Saturday, and look for the DRB Race Of The Week every Friday, as we will try and feature Kentucky Derby prep races as they are scheduled.
