The Pimlico Thoroughbred Race Track is located at 5201 Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland. The track has been the home of The Preakness Stakes since it’s inception in 1870. The track in it’s current form is a one mile dirt oval, which surrounds a seven furlong turf course. The capacity of the grounds, including the infield is 120,000 people.
The Preakness is a Grade 1 Stakes Race, the second jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown. (Belmont Stakes being the 3rd) The race distance is a mile and 3/16 (9 furlongs) and the entrants will run for a share of the $1.5 million dollar purse. The Preakness track record goes all the way back to 1973 when the great(est) SECRETARIAT covered the distance in an eye-popping 1:53:00.
Kentucky Derby winning (JUSTIFY) trainer Bob Baffert has six Preakness wins on his resume. His previous four KD winners have gone on to win The Preakness. Can JUSTIFY be the fifth ? Post positions and morning line odds will be assigned on Wednesday May 16th. DRB will assess JUSTIFY’s chances as well as the rest of the field (won’t be 20 runners as was the KD) next week. So check back.
Preakness is 1 3/16 miles.
